Your role in making AI better over time
Most people hear “human in the loop” and think it means babysitting. Check every output. Verify every fact. That framing is exhausting and unsustainable. Here’s the reframe: your job isn’t to watch AI. It’s to teach it. Every time you notice where it falls short, you can do something about it — and the next interaction gets better.
Let’s run a quick exercise. Give your AI a realistic task and then evaluate the result through a specific lens.
Draft a project status update for my team. The project is a website redesign. This week we completed the wireframes for the homepage and product pages, hit a delay on the mobile navigation (waiting on design assets), and we're on track to start development next Monday. Keep it under 150 words, use bullet points, and keep the tone direct but positive.
Paste this into your AI. Then review the output with these three questions:
What did it get right?
This tells you what’s in AI’s sweet spot for you. No action needed — just notice it. These are the tasks you can confidently delegate next time.
What did it get wrong or miss?
This is a jagged edge you’ve found. Note it for future prompts. Next time, you’ll know to be more specific about this particular thing.
What context was it missing?
This is a custom instructions or project-level fix. You can prevent this from happening again by giving AI this context upfront in future conversations.
Each of those three questions points to a different fix. Here’s how to act on what you notice.
If it missed your style → Update your custom instructions (). Add your preferred tone, format, or vocabulary. If you always want bullet points instead of paragraphs, say so once in your settings and it applies everywhere.
If it lacked project context → Start conversations with a brief project recap. Some tools let you pin project context that loads automatically. Even a two-sentence summary of what you’re working on makes a noticeable difference.
If it hallucinated a fact → This is a verification category. Mark it mentally: outputs about this topic always need a fact check. Over time, you build an instinct for which domains need extra scrutiny.
This is the real power of being human in the loop. Your custom instructions get more dialed in. Your prompting instincts sharpen. You learn which tasks AI handles well and which need more guidance. AI doesn’t improve for you on its own — you improve it. Think of it like training a new team member. At first, lots of direction. Over time, you learn each other’s strengths, and the collaboration gets faster.

Not all outputs need the same level of scrutiny. Trying to verify everything is a fast track to burnout — and it defeats the purpose of using AI in the first place. The key is calibrated trust.
A quick rule: if the output will be sent externally (to clients, leadership, public audiences), verify facts and proofread carefully. The stakes are higher, and a hallucinated statistic in a client deck is a bad look.
If it’s internal or a draft — notes for yourself, a brainstorm document, a first pass you’ll revise anyway — you can trust more and iterate. The cost of an error is low, and you’ll catch issues in the next revision.
The goal is calibrated trust, not zero trust. Over time, you develop intuition for which outputs to rubber-stamp and which to review carefully. That intuition is one of the most valuable skills you’ll build through this course.
